Vexilla Regis Prodeunt

This composition, which is based on a famous hymn text for Passiontide written by Venantius Fortunatus of the sixth century, is the last piece of church music written by Anton Bruckner who is regarded by many as the foremost composer of church music of the second half of the 19th century. In it we find a beautiful blending of ancient mediaevalism and 19th-century romanticism. In it, however, pomp is replaced by mystic musical imagery. - Walter E. Buszin.
