The collapse of authoritarian regimes in Eastern Europe and recent uncertainties about the future direction and membership of European Community have had a profound impact on the lives of millions of women. Thinking about citizenship helps us to understand these changes yet usually such concepts include almost everything but gender. As the contributions in this book show, adding gender shifts our assumptions about identity, the state, community, the family, economic agency, territory, rights and duties.
