Synopsis

Text in German. Julius von Schlosser (1866-1938) is one of the great figures in art history and, alongside Alois Riegl (1858-1905), can be considered the most influential representative of the Viennese School. On the occasion of his 150th birthday, the contributions presented here position the Viennese scholar in the history of art history and within the current methodological discourse. The contributions go back to a conference jointly organized by the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Institute for Art History at the University of Vienna and open up new perspectives on the life and work of Julius von Schlosser. Central themes are his influential role as a museum man and university teacher and his publications on the art and curiosity chambers of the late Renaissance, portraits in wax and art literature, but also his importance as a historiographer of the Vienna School and his ambitions as a bridge builder between Germany and Italy and its relationship to important contemporaries such as Wilhelm von Bode, Alois Riegl, Aby Warburg, Heinrich Wölfflin, Karl Vossler and Benedetto Croce.
