Theo lives on The Spit, away from the mainland, a place where everyone knows everyone, where secrets have no place to hide. Though he was born on the island, Theo has always felt different to the other children. His mother was born on the mainland, brought in when she married his father, and the other families hold them at a distance.

When Angie and Sam invite Theo into their fold, he thinks he has found kin. More, he thinks he has found his life's love in Angie. When the two girls go missing, all signs point to Theo.

Now, decades later, Theo's mother has died and he has to return to the island to deal with the things she never wanted to. The island is different now but there are still those lingering questions about the missing girls and Theo's involvement. When another girl goes missing, all eyes are on Theo.
