Charles de Montesquieu's De l'esprit des lois changed the world. The principle of the separation of powers that became so self-evident in Western legal thought can primarily be traced back to this work, in which Montesquieu presents the three state forms of democracy, monarchy, and despotism in their respective dependence on natural and social conditions.
