Unser Mittelalter!: Die Erste Jüdische Gemeinde in Wien

Text in German. The Jewish Museum Vienna is showing a new permanent exhibition in the Museum Judenplatz from March 2021. This volume is being published, which is devoted to a largely neglected chapter in Viennese history: one of the most important Jewish communities in Europe lived in medieval Vienna. At the beginning of the 13th century, Jews settled around today's Judenplatz, where they lived together and in close contact with the Christian population for around 200 years, until they were robbed and driven out on the orders of Duke Albrecht V in 1420/21 Ten texts and numerous illustrations offer an overview not only of the first Jewish community in Vienna, but also of the eventful history of Vienna's Judenplatz. The focus on Jewish Vienna in the Middle Ages sharpens perspectives on today's social context.
