Synopsis

The decidedly philosophical elaboration of the idea of tolerance has its origins in the confessional conflicts of the (counter)Reformation. Even today, the question of tolerance seems particularly urgent in religious contexts, particularly concerning the Islamic world. This volume offers an introduction to the history as well as the diverse systematic aspects of tolerance with a focus on the Western and Islamic cultural areas. Beginning with Roman antiquity, the various perspectives of the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as the specifically Islamic conceptions of tolerance, are examined. Contributions on the debates on tolerance in contemporary political philosophy and the question of the usefulness of epistemic justifications of tolerance round off the volume.
