Synopsis

1672. A generation after the Civil War, England is still struggling to gain normality after the conflict had alienated neighbours and families. In the village of Spadboro, Jonathan Dymond is a cider maker who has lived a quiet and harmonious life with his parents. But then the death of his uncle leads Jonathan to secrets that have lain dormant since the war... Discovering that his dying uncle's letter to his father hints at inheritance and revenge, he goes to stay with his now widowed aunt to unravel the mystery wrapped around his family. But she is hostile and reluctant to speak of the past, and Jonathan's investigations unleash obsessions and madness that threaten the lives and happiness of Jonathan and all those he holds dear.
