As the sun rose on July 3, 1863, two battered armies regrouped after two days of massive and inconclusive fighting near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Confederate General Robert E. Lee had gained what he considered a series of partial successes and remained committed to the attack. Major General George Meade's Army of the Potomac persisted in their defense of Cemetery Ridge. Far from being an anti-climactic day, the third day at Gettysburg still held the battle's fate in the balance. Fighting raged for seven hours at Culp's Hill, among the cavalry on both flanks, and finally during Lee's massive assault best-known as Pickett's Charge. When it was over, Lee received his most decisive defeat to date, but the battlefield of Gettysburg achieved immortality.
