Synopsis

Cole Younger resolved to become a guerilla in Civil War Missouri after the murder of his father, and the violent death of his brother in the violent years just before the outbreak of the war. He rode with Quantrell, fell in with Jesse James, and became a leader in his gang of outlaws in the years after the war. He and his companions had lost their homes and even their families, and so carried on a private war of vengeance against the Union and all it came to represent to them. These memoirs are his own account of his life, summarized by a reflection on law, peace, faith, and his restoration to social order.

Younger's memoirs remain an important eye-witness account of frontier violence and banditry in the Old West during and after the Civil War. It includes an editor's foreword.
