The Stations of the Sun

The Stations of the Sun, 1998 piece for large orchestra, is inspired by a work of anthropology: the study of rituals and cycles that make up a year. There are the trappings of celebration and evocation: bells, drums, brass fanfares, and riotous dances, as the orchestra moves through four distinct phases in 17 minutes. 'Everything has a clear place in the overall design', The Plain Dealer wrote, 'from the playful episodes that seem to bubble to the rising clamor that leads to the rising deployment of winds, brasses and percussion.'
