Synopsis

The Princess is Tennyson's ambitious "medley" of romance, satire, and philosophical debate, cast largely in supple blank verse and framed as a playful tale told among university men. Its plot follows Princess Ida, who founds a women's college and renounces marriage, only to encounter the disguised Prince betrothed to her in childhood. Beneath its mock-heroic surface, the poem engages urgent Victorian questions about women's education, separate spheres, and social progress, while its interpolated lyrics, including some of Tennyson's most memorable songs, deepen its emotional register. Alfred Tennyson, later Baron Tennyson and Poet Laureate, wrote from within the intellectual and moral tensions of nineteenth-century Britain. Personally marked by grief, religious doubt, and an acute sensitivity to public feeling, he repeatedly transformed contemporary anxieties into formally polished poetry. The Princess reflects both his fascination with modern reform and his cautious, sometimes conflicted, response to changing gender relations. Readers interested in Victorian literature, gender history, or the evolution of narrative poetry will find The Princess richly rewarding. It is witty, musical, intellectually alert, and revealingly unsettled.
