Founded in 1842, the North British Railway grew to become the largest of Scotland's old pre-Grouping railway companies. Across eight eventful decades it became dominant in the east of Scotland principally but it also had lines in the west and into Northumberland. Through this time it had to cope with an ever-changing society, an expanding and contracting economy and its own internal problems and power struggles.
