Noel Burun can memorise a deck of shuffled playing cards in under sixty seconds, a 100-digit number after hearing it only once, and recite the value of pi to a hundred places. He has hypermnesia and synaesthesia - his memory is unrelentingly exact and when people speak he sees their words as vibrant explosions of colour. His mother, on the other hand, is slowly sinking into the quicksand of Alzheimer's.
