Synopsis

The Last Leaf Poem is a beautiful and poignant work of poetry written by Oliver Wendell Holmes. The poem tells the story of two young artists, Johnsy and Sue, who live in a small apartment in New York City. Johnsy falls ill with pneumonia, and becomes convinced that she will die when the last leaf falls from the vine outside her window. Despite Sue's attempts to reassure her, Johnsy grows weaker and weaker as the days go by, and the leaves begin to fall.As the last leaf on the vine stubbornly refuses to fall, Johnsy becomes convinced that it is a sign of hope, and that she will recover from her illness. Sue watches over her friend, and is filled with both hope and despair as the days pass. Finally, when the last leaf falls, Johnsy seems to give up all hope, and sinks into a deep sleep. However, when Sue goes to check on her, she finds that Johnsy has recovered, and that the last leaf was actually a painting that their elderly neighbor, Mr. Behrman, had created in order to give Johnsy hope. The Last Leaf Poem is a moving and powerful meditation on the themes of hope, friendship, and the power of art to inspire and heal. It is a timeless work of literature that continues to resonate with readers of all ages and backgrounds. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
