Synopsis

Amsterdam, 1943. She is a German officer's wife. She is also the most dangerous person in the Dutch resistance network.

Elsa Brenner arrived in occupied Amsterdam as the Hauptmann's Frau - a role she performs with the mechanical precision of someone doing a job they did not choose. Her husband administers the occupation. She walks the city, learns its canals, reads its history in Dutch, and waits for something she cannot yet name.

In October she walks into a small antiquarian bookshop on Spiegelstraat. She goes looking for something to read. She finds Henrik de Vries instead.

When a fragment of intelligence arrives at the bookshop from occupied Poland, Elsa recognises the administrative designation on it. She has seen it in her husband's locked files. The recognition changes everything: her access to his documentation, her position inside the German administrative apparatus, her proximity to the people using that apparatus to do something irreversible to Amsterdam's Jewish population.

She has the access. The network has the channels. The canal house on the Keizersgracht has eight people behind a bookcase who need both.

What follows - the documents, the warnings, the investigation, the choice to stay when leaving would have been safer - is the story of a woman who finds, in the most dangerous conditions imaginable, the most honest version of herself she has ever lived.

The Amsterdam Promise is the third novel in The Unbroken Thread, a four-part series following women across occupied Europe connected by a single letter. For readers of Kristin Hannah, Kate Quinn, and Pam Jenoff.
