Synopsis

Debates on ethics dealing with peace and freedom, marriage and the family, social justice and protection of the environment quickly became pivotal debates of self-understanding in the young Federal Republic. Protestants took part in them with the strong intention to interpret and shape them with the commitments of the church, individuals and society. This gave rise to the specific features of a Federal German post-war Protestantism. The studies in this volume document methodical problems, subject-specific research interests and new insights of an interdisciplinary group of researchers who in combining perspectives of theology, contemporary history and political science deal with the inner diversity of Protestantism, the range of its social presence and the complexity of its own dynamics of change.
