Friedrich Ueberweg (1826-71) is best remembered for both his compendious *History of Philosophy* and his *System of Logic*, both of which went through several editions in the original German. It was the latter's remarkable popularity as a textbook in Germany that led Lindsay to translate it to fill a gap in the English market. As well as incorporating the most up-to-date revisions and additions of the German edition he inserted the opinions of the more important English logicians.
