Street's reputation for being England's largest village has become more and more contradictory. Yet it manages to keep features that 'Streetonians' feel comfortable with. The lengthy High Street has many 'proper' shops, and many old landmarks survive to this day. Street's origins stretch back to prehistoric times, and the primitive icthyosaurus excavated locally is the official modern emblem.
