"Evident in recent decades is a significant rise in the use of iconography among scholars dealing with the art of the Modern period. With the shift away from the once dominant formalist approach, greater importance is now being attached to subject matter and the exploration of symbolic content. Perhaps most astonishing is the growing use of the iconographical and iconological methods in studies dealing with abstract art.
