Short Breaks: Providing Better Access and More Choice for Black Disabled Children and Their Parents
Synopsis
Current government policy supports short breaks for disabled children, and the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 requires public services to promote racial equality. However, Black disabled children are under-represented in short break services and their families face barriers to access to, and choice within them. Services therefore need to actively practice inclusion to avoid colluding with institutional racism. Short breaks: · covers an under-researched topic with under-researched ethnic groups, and combines two aspects of children's social identity that can have a low profile in services - that of being Black and disabled · includes interviews with disabled children and young people in Scotland, with parents and short break carers, and with short break providers. This report is aimed at practitioners, policy makers, academics and all those who wish to see improved services for Black disabled children and their families.
