Science Written by Women

Basil Montagu (1770-1851) was one of the period's leading advocates for the abolition of capital punishment. When he published the three installments of *The Opinions of Different Authors upon the Punishment of Death* he intended to provide a fillip to the debate in England over the relative merits and deficiencies of the judicial punishment of death. Included are writings from Thomas More, Francis Bacon, Walter Raleigh, Thomas Hobbes, David Hume, William Blacksone, Samuel Johnson, William Paley, and Jeremy Bentham. This is the first reprinting since its original publication in 1809-1813.
