English summary: Is it possible to represent the history of the perception of Italian ruins and their aesthetic significance through the interplay of the imagination and physical evidence? This study devotes itself to this task by including in its deliberations accounts from 18th and early 19th century European travel literature as well as graphic art. Alongside case studies devoted to landscapes of well-known Roman ruins in Italy, it unearths a panorama of possible perceptions. The findings confirm Diderot's dictum in which latitude within the force of the imagination affects the ruins. In the 18th century, a ruin represented a state of uncertainty between meaning and time. The way they were perceived - trapped in discourses on beauty and sublimity, the moment and the passing of time - is subject to a complex process of transformation that goes far beyond the emblematic and iconic codification of transience and sentimentality. Entlang von Fallstudien, die sich prominenten romisch-antiken Ruinenlandschaften in Italien widmen, wird das Panorama moglicher Wahrnehmungen aufgedeckt.
