This first volume, published originally in 1916, includes the history of the Texas Folk-Lore Society, Texas play-party songs and games, religious beliefs of the Tejas (or Hasanias) Indians, State Industrial School boys' slang, traditions of the Waco Indians, wild horse stories of Southwest Texas, among many others. The contributors include L. W. Payne, Adina De Zavala, Dorothy Scarborough, Walter Prescott Webb, John A. Lomax.
