Landscapes are often perceived as romantic - and cities? The urban space is an equally important place for updating ideas and aesthetic strategies of historical romanticism. The volume shows how romantic models were formed in city designs, city perceptions and city appropriations. Even if the great importance of experiencing nature in Romanticism remains undisputed, it can be shown that in addition to nature and landscape, the city is also an important area for updating Romantic forms. Central elements of romantic conceptions of the city are the harmonious connection of city and country, the aestheticization of urban built and social space, the appreciation of the fragmentary and the orientation towards an imagined past. These basic features of romantic urbanity are presented in various facets in this volume and also updates to modern city marketing are revealed.
