• As a child, the author witnesses her home, community, and sacred tribal grounds disappear beneath a massive lake because of the Pick-Sloan Flood Control Plan Act. Many of the events in the Big Heart Series are inspired by Beartrack-Algeo's childhood experiences and those of her Lakota father who was named Big Heart at an early age by the Lakota Elders.
