In Switzerland and other western countries, educational expansion is often asserted to lead to a more open society, in which individual achievement (rather than social reproduction) contributes to the wellbeing of future generations. Particularly relevant in this context is the field of partnership and family formation, which can be assumed to be strongly influenced by educational transformations. The special issue (S0(BEducational Expansion, Family Interactions, and the Open Society(S1(B examines the consequences of educational expansion for partnership and family interaction in a comparative perspective and studies how they contribute to the openness of the Swiss society.
