Synopsis
This book addresses the history of the Indigenous peoples in the United States, compared to the situation in Latin America and Canada. The narrative connects this history with the political concept of manifest destiny dating back some 150 years; this concept has gained renewed interest and popularity particularly in the country's right-wing political atmosphere. This links with renewed expansionist ambitions. The final part of the book is an analysis of the possibility of peace, which looks increasingly unlikely, given the global political atmosphere in the mid 2020s. Many very good studies have been published about Native American history, but few put this history into a wider American context, comparing the history of Indigenous peoples in Latin America and Canada. The author examines the history of the Indigenous peoples in the USA with more recent stated expansionist intentions by the US government.
