Synopsis
Paul Chrystal is the author of many books on York, but of these this must have the shortest title. It's a nice and varied collection of old photos of the city accompanied by often quite lengthy captions. Comprising almost 150 photographs there is a lot in here. The picture selection is esoteric and the social history pictures include Terry's factory, flooding in various streets, orphan children and the deaf and dumb members. Better-known locations include Walmgate Bar and the railway station, and lesser-known like the Bar Convent and Blossom Street's Crescent Cafe and Danse Salon. Cinemas, baths, pubs, markets and shopfronts add to what is a most diverse and eclectic collection of images.
