Cherie was published in 1884. The method used by Edmond de Goncourt in this interrupted trajectory of a young upper middle class woman was disconcerting: an intensive work of documentary research that attempted to divest the novel of any plot. The author drove forward the scientific implications of naturalism while at the same time enfolding it within the symbolist aesthetic.
