Synopsis

This latest volume in the 'Classic Diesels' series features the northern English county of Northumberland, occasionally straying into neighbouring Cumberland or Durham when appropriate. It focuses mainly on the 1980s when the first-generation diesels held sway. Serving ten collieries, an opencast and Blyth power station, freight traffic at this time was dominated by coal, and this traffic helped some of the network survive longer. The photos in the book reflect the nature of the county: industrialised and built-up in some areas and other parts very rural. Locations shown include Ashington Colliery, Brampton Fell, Newcastle, Blaydon, Hexham, Halwhistle, Heaton, Benton Quarry Junction and more.
