Synopsis

Features speeches celebrating literary prize recipient Barbara Honigmann, a film forum on Ruth Beckermann's 2018 documentary Waldheims Walzer, and essays on Anne Frank, translating Marx, Yiddish studies, and other topics. Nexus is the official publication of the biennial German Jewish Studies Workshop at the University of Notre Dame. Together, Nexus and the workshop constitute the first ongoing German Jewish Studies forum in North America for German Jewish Studies. Nexus 7 features a special section of speeches celebrating literary prize recipient Barbara Honigmann, and a lively film forum (edited by Brad Prager) on the 2018 documentary Waldheims Walzer. It continues its commitment to revisiting prior research in a dynamically changing field with a reflection on the disciplinarity of scholarly reviews (Daniel Reynolds). Rounding out the volume is exciting new scholarship on The Diary of Anne Frank (Thomas Sparr), translating Marx's Capital (Paul Reitter), new directions in Yiddish/German literary relations (Jeffrey Grossman), Karl Kraus's Third Walpurgis Night (Leo Lensing), Joseph Roth's Job (Jan Bürger), the migration experiences of a mother and daughter in the Third Reich (Amy Shevitz), and Max Czollek's poem cycle "von der Wiederkehr" (Molly Krueger).
