The ZHF provides a forum for research on the history of pre-modern Europe. Its concept is based on the idea of perceiving the epochs of the late Middle Ages and the early modern period as a structural unit, extending beyond the caesura around 1500. In addition to essays, the ZHF regularly publishes current research reports and a comprehensive review section. A thematically focused supplement is published twice a year.
