This book enquires into the processes by which certain contemporary women pay testimony to history. It examines the reasons why they recreate the past, whether political, social or artistic, and the strategies employed to establish a comparison with the present. The focus is on authors such as A.S. Byatt, Pat Barker, Anne Enright, Tracy Chevalier and Ali Smith.
