Synopsis

The main purpose of this book is to throw light on Cataract blindness - an insurmountable problem that was prevalent in the villages of India - and the programs that were implemented on a war footing to control this blindness. Dr Modi, a unqualified single man volunteer, took the courageous initiative of conducting eye camps in remote areas in India which revealed the enormous problem of blindness in Indian villages. This lead to the formation of the National Program for Control of Blindness (NPCB), a Central Government program with State Government involvement. WHO and private agencies took an active interest in helping this Government initiative. The success of this great struggle has never been revealed to the people at large, though it is well known among the professionals who worked towards it.The book also talks about the normal lens inside the eye, the function of this lens and about the Cataract that can develop within it. The types of Cataract and its symptoms are also described. In my 50 plus years of journeying, I have had to change and adapt to the changing trends of technological advancements. The details of the latest techniques in surgery are also discussed. No other field in medicine can claim such epoch-making discoveries like the 'artificial lens implantation', the 'Phacoemulsification' method for the removal of a Cataract and the use of Laser to correct eye disorders.
