Milano Prima Del Barbarossa: Spazi E Pratiche Politiche Tra XI E XII Secolo

Between the 11th and 12th centuries, Milan established itself as a leading political and religious centre in the Regnum Italiae . The civitas underwent a process of reorganisation involving the archbishop, the first civil institutions and other power groups active in the city's political space. This volume examines the transformations that involved the ways of managing power and collective practices in Milan in the century between the rise of Henry III (1046) and the announcement of the first descent of Frederick Barbarossa into Italy (1153). The focus is on the spaces of politics, public rituals and forms of interaction between social actors in a fundamental period for the history of Milan in the central centuries of the Middle Ages. Through a careful analysis of the sources, the configurations of power and the strategies of consolidation of authority emerge clearly. The investigation thus provides a picture of pre-municipal Milan that highlights the power relations between local powers and the broader context of the Regnum, offering new tools for understanding the political history of the city.
