Migrations Postcoloniales Des Juifs Du Maroc: Vers Le Canada Et La France
Synopsis
Migrations postcoloniales des Juifs du Maroc sheds light on a little-known chapter in the history of Jewish migrations: the mass departure of Moroccan Jews after the Shoah, set against the backdrop of the dismantling of the French colonial empire.
Edited by Yolande Cohen, herself part of this migration, this collective volume draws on life stories, archival materials, and the press to bring this singular history to life. Between displacement and reinvention, the essays trace the complex trajectories leading to France and Quebec, with a particular focus on the Montreal experience. There, a new identity emerged-distinct from both the francophone Québécois majority and the already established Ashkenazi Jewish community.
By comparing the French and Canadian contexts, the volume highlights the role of public policy and transnational Jewish networks. Most importantly, it gives a voice to the migrants themselves, revealing a fluid migratory space linking Morocco, Canada, France, and Israel, where memory, belonging, and mobility intersect.
The English and French editions, though distinct, complement each other to offer a comprehensive view of the subject.
