Synopsis

The Terrors of the Civil War and Reconstruction: The Memoirs of J. M. Gibson is a rare memoir from an eyewitness of the history described. Gibson was only a boy when the war began and recounts his experiences of his father's slaves, his family's involvement in the War, and the fall of his hometown of Vicksburg to the Union. Gibson is particularly interested in the experience of emancipation and the position of the freemen during Reconstruction. The racial tensions and incitements of Reconstruction form the drama of the second half of the memoir, with many picturesque and shocking instances of the passions of the time.
