Synopsis

Max Weber's famous study "The Protestant Ethic and the 'Spirit' of Capitalism", which was published as a sequel of two essays in the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik for the first time in 1904 and 1905, is presented here along with texts which were written during the first controversy over this study between 1907 and 1910. In response to this controversy, Weber wrote four rejoinders in which he defended his approach and his main argument. This controversy is presented here in full. The volume also contains other texts written between 1905 and 1910 related to the Protestant Ethic, for example the essays on "'Churches' and 'Sects' in North America ". In it, Weber summarizes some of the insights which originated during his journey through the U.S. in 1904. The context of these texts is described in the introduction, and the editorial reports study Weber's selection and use of the sources.
