Marine Mammals in a Changing World, 2nd Edition
Synopsis
Despite valuable advances in our understanding of marine mammals over the past several decades, numerous unanswered questions remain. These include fundamental questions in all biological disciplines, as well as in other areas of science, including applied biochemistry, materials, and physics. Current studies of marine mammals reflect major improvements in technology, as well as equally large changes in the ocean environment. Contributions focusing on all areas of marine mammal research were invited for this Special Issue Reprint, especially those focusing on new technological advances and changes in ocean habitats affecting marine mammals (including but not limited to changes in climate/temperature; ocean acidification; noise, plastic, or chemical pollution; vessel traffic and ship strikes; pathogenic viruses and microbes; trophic and salinity changes; fisheries' impacts; habitat destruction; and related topics). The twelve published articles in this Reprint focus on diverse areas of marine mammal research and health, including behavior; biogeography and migration; population management and conservation; foraging ecology; and physiology, health, and pathology. Multiple contributions relate to plastic exposure, climate change, and tourism, as well as related aspects of human interaction with marine mammals.
