Margot Ringwald spent the years of her childhood in Chernivtsi. The Bukovinian city was a flourishing metropolis of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the beginning of the 20th century and is now part of the Ukraine. In between there is an extremely changeable and painful history, for the city and for its residents, especially if they were Jews like Margot Ringwald and her family. As a ninety-year-old Margot Ringwald reports on the time before, during and after the war. Her story is individual and unique, and yet it is also typical; it stands for the fate of a large part of the extinct Eastern European Jewry, as the book clearly shows.
