Synopsis

Originally published in 1936, this book presents an account of some aspects of the life of the renowned French letter-writer and aristocrat Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marquise de Sévigné (1626-96). The text was written by the Cambridge literary critic Arthur Augustus Tilley (1851-1942) and is divided into four chapters: 'Mme de Sévigné and the news'; 'Mme de Sévigné and her friends'; 'Mme de Sévigné at Livry and Les Rochers'; 'Mme de Sévigné and her books'. Notes are incorporated throughout. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the life and writings of Mme de Sévigné or seventeenth-century France.
