Synopsis

In the first volume of Mario Satz's trilogy on the gifts, The Gardener of Chahar Bagh, we were given access to the secrets and details of the art of gardening, whose lives and adventures were revealed to us. In the second, The Master Musicians and the Enchanted Flute, we follow with growing interest the stories of an enchanted flute in India, the construction of a pyramid in Egypt with its workers consoled by harpists, we enter biblical Israel to hear the psalmody of the Levites on the steps leading to the temple, and we see, in 16th-century Japan, the relationship between music and incense games. Having explored the uses and customs of flowers, trees, and orchards, the author leads us in this book to the lives and works of all those who, in the plucking of a string, the beating of a drum, or the sound of a wind instrument, express their highest ambition: to sing of life and, if possible, to overcome the sadness of death through music. The Persian poet Hafiz tells that, having made a creature similar to himself out of clay, the Creator tried to breathe life into it, but as it moved here and there, restless, oscillating and ubiquitous, and resisted entering the human body, the Maker sent for the musical angels to play their best melodies and, upon hearing them, fascinated, the soul entered into ecstasy. However, realizing that its acoustic perception was not fine enough to capture that sonorous beauty, the soul then entered the clay man to use him as a sound box. It was from that moment on that, through music, body and soul linked their destinies in the most harmonious way possible. Of all the arts, music is the one that comes closest to the limits of what can be expressed. It penetrates the invisible and leads us, with its rhythms and melodies, to the deepest and most elusive parts of ourselves.
