Al tiempo saga familiar y gran novela de guerra, esta obra se sitúa en el noreste de Croacia y narra el destino de los Volksdeutsche, la minorìa alemana asentada en la región desde el siglo XVIII. Reclutados por las Waffen SS durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, estos hombres y mujeres quedaron atrapados entre lealtades enfrentadas. Georg Kempf, el protagonista, es un soldado alemán &«a su pesar» que, tras vivir el horror del conflicto, decide desertar. En el centro del relato se encuentra la trágica historia de amor entre Georg y Vera, una partisana croata: dos antiguos enemigos unidos por una historia común marcada por la violencia.

Both a family saga and a sweeping war novel, this book is set in northeastern Croatia and recounts the fate of the Volksdeutsche, the German minority that had settled in the region in the eighteenth century. Recruited into the Waffen SS during the Second World War, these men and women found themselves trapped between conflicting loyalties. The protagonist, Georg Kempf, is a German soldier "against his will" who, after witnessing the horrors of war, chooses to desert. At the heart of the narrative lies the tragic love story between Georg and Vera, a Croatian partisan-two former enemies bound together by a shared history marked by violence.
