Synopsis

The corpus of images shown in this volume originally comprised 432 draft drawings for the titles of the Digesten, the main part of Justinian law, which was also adopted in the Netherlands in the 17th century. The picture ensemble shows the baroque living environment of the Netherlands at a time when it experienced an incomparable economic and cultural boom. It documents the integration of legal, art historical and didactic purposes: as Orbis pictus of Roman law, it converts the ideas of mnemonic Ars Magna on tiles and thus becomes a source of images of Roman law: the tiles and drawings obtained based on an idea of the tile manufacturer Sybrant Feytema are a unique testimony to European legal culture.
