Synopsis

In the late nineteenth century, a group of German-speaking Mennonites leaves Russia for Central Asia, following the prophecy of their leader, who believes the Second Coming of Christ will take place there. More than a century later, Sofia Samatar retraces their journey, drawn to the fate of that expedition: the founding of a small Christian village in the Muslim khanate of Khiva. In the course of her search, the author reconstructs a constellation of stories converging along the ancient Silk Road, reflecting on identity, faith, and displacement.
