La Abadesa De Castro: Una Crónica Italiana

The first of Stendhal's novellas that comprise his *Italian Chronicles*, this story is considered a literary gem. Stendhal begins with a prologue of sorts about the sixteenth century and the state of mind of the people of Florence, but he soon begins to weave a tale about an impossible love between a well-intentioned bandit named Julio Branciforte and a noble young lady, the beautiful Elena Campireali. The tale slowly acquires psychological depth and transforms from the picturesque into the dramatic: the characters make mistakes and are selfish and extremely cruel, all of which is justified in the name of that disproportionate feeling that was known as love in Renaissance Italy. *La primera de las novelas cortas que conforman las* Crónicas italianas *de Stendhal, ésta historia es considerada un joya literaria.
