Synopsis

Images of war are omnipresent. But they do not depict, neither yesterday nor today. Their message extends far beyond what is visible, beyond what is depicted. This applies to the visual representations of war and violence, but it also applies to the images of language: ut pictura poesis, images and images of language are inextricably intertwined. They often employ the same arguments, employing the same formulas intended to move, motivate, and justify, but not to depict. The effects of reality are a component of their rhetoric, not their purpose. How such images of war emerge, what messages they convey, and what effects they exertthe authors of this volume attempt to answer these and similar questions. The chronology spans from the Hundred Years' War to the battles and destruction of the 18th century. Thematically, it addresses the modes, functions, and limits of representation, the construction and reception of images of war, but also their effects, interactions, and their independent existence. Images of war can be found in poetry and painting, in chronicles, journalism and personal accounts, and are therefore treated from a historical, art-historical and literary perspective.
