English summary: The area along the Rhine valley was a pioneering region for the Reformation movement. The simultaneous interactions of the many diverse processes which took place here are of paradigmatic significance for the understanding of the Reformation. With the rediscovery of spatial dimensions in younger research, it is possible to expand these approaches to the classical field of territorial history. As a result, important territories such as the Palatinate, Wurttemberg, or the church organizations of the Archdiocese of Mainz and other dioceses, come into view. The main priority of this current volume is to ascertain and describe this complex melange. The 25 studies deal with three subject areas: the balance of power, the educational infrastructure and the interrelations between strategies and conflicts. The volume systematically explores the regional history consistently alongside the Reformation history of the realm and Europe.

German description: Das Gebiet entlang des Rheingrabens ist eine Pionierregion fur die reformatorische Bewegung. Das in ihr ablaufende Zusammenspiel vielfaltigster Prozesse gewinnt paradigmatische Bedeutung fur das Verstandnis der Reformation. Mit der Wiederentdeckung raumlicher Dimensionen in der jungeren Forschung gelingt es, diese Forschungsansatze auf die klassischen Felder der Territorialgeschichte zu erweitern. So kommen wichtige Territorien wie die Pfalz, Wurttemberg oder die Kirchenorganisationen des Erzbistums Mainz und weiterer Bistumer in den Blick. Die vordringliche Aufgabe des vorliegenden Bandes ist es, diese komplexe Gemengelage zu erheben und zu beschreiben. Die 25 Untersuchungen behandeln drei Themenkreise: Machtverhaltnisse, Bildungslandschaft und den Zusammenhang von Strategien und Konflikten. Systematisch wird das Verhaltnis der regionalen konsequent mit der Reichs- und der europaischen Reformationsgeschichte ausgelotet.
