Information Books: Teacher's Guide 1 : Becoming a Reader

The Becoming a Reader: Information Book Teacher's Guide 1 accompanies the nine information books in the second phase of the scheme. It gives essential guidance on how to introduce information retrieval skills through the use of the books and activities, mainly in Year 1/Primary 2. The guide has two parts. Part 1 sets out: the need for information books at this phase; the structure and language of the information books; the use of dual texts; a model for the teaching of information retrieval skills; how to use the Big Books: guidance on using the books in Group Reading; an approach to record keeping; information on the book's authors and illustrators. Part 2 offers notes and activities to develop the children's understanding of the information retrieval skills.
